Ok 1) I still don't fully understand Taoism.
2) I see a lot of the points you love about Taoism being true for Buddhism as well -- holding on and letting go. For me, meditation is a movement, and I am coming to terms with everything that is in the moment - not shielding my sprirtual half from my living half. Form my perspective, (Buddhist) meditation IS riding the horse, and all you do in your everyday. You see it differently? Am I missing something?
3) I also don't think I'm gritting my teeth til I reachenlightenment. I think everyone is enlightened, and that is our true nature, just as we are right now and every day, whether we are being cruel or grouchy or peaceful or sad..... I don't know if I am on target with Buddhist teachings or not, but I seem to have gotten that sense from them somehow...
4) I can't believe you equated the path to Buddhist enlightenment with the path to Christian salvation! You are in trouble!

Ok, I have to set the record straight. I did remember the AIDS ribbon, just not the color. When I worked for The Body Shop we sold AIDS bracelets in gold and silver, but not red. Watch out Amy, you might end up with a bunch of red ribbons in your yard anyway!

So, the dogwood memorial was up before the smoke even settled in Vietnam? That's pretty cool.

The part about your dad made me think of a quote I love: "We cannot lose the things we love; for those that we truly cared about, become... a part of us."

It's how I think about my dad.

They do have a service there, I believe once a year. I've seen them out there- they play music and someone gets up to speak. No further info though.

Memorials can be a tricky thing. A lot of emotions involved, but I guess only for those who the memorial holds meaning for. How do you create a memorial that continues to teach to those who are coming to it without knowledge of the event/person? Hmmmm... figure that one out and you've got yourself a new business venture!

Actually, it's from back in the 1970s. It was the nation's first Vietnam War memorial.

What a beautiful, brilliant, heartbreaking essay. You really know how to make a person think, and feel, and cry. Thank you for being so alive and so real, and thank you for writing. I'm so glad you share your words and your heart and your self with the rest of us.

And, when you smell better, the odds of getting the things you want go up tremendously.

Seriously, though, this was a wonderful experiment. One I think I will try myself.
